Mould Prevention

Mould prevention begins with stopping moisture and identifying what stayed wet. Early removal of badly affected porous finishes may reduce the extent of later repairs, but established growth can require specialized remediation.

Warning signs

  • Materials that remain damp after 24–48 hours
  • Musty odours
  • Discolouration or spotting
  • Condensation inside walls or ceilings
  • Recurring moisture in the same area

What to do immediately

  1. 1Stop the leak or moisture source when safe.
  2. 2Do not paint over visible growth.
  3. 3Avoid disturbing large affected areas.
  4. 4Keep vulnerable occupants away from suspected contamination.

Understand the situation

Common causes and what we assess

The visible damage is often only part of the problem. A proper response looks at where the issue began, what materials may be affected, and what must happen before repairs can safely start.

Common causes

  • Materials remaining wet after a leak or flood
  • Recurring plumbing, roof, or foundation moisture
  • Condensation caused by ventilation or insulation problems
  • Previous water damage that was covered before fully drying

What we assess

  • Locate and correct the moisture source
  • Measure affected materials rather than relying only on appearance
  • Consider the size, duration, location, and occupants affected
  • Refer established or extensive growth to a qualified remediation professional

How we handle the damage

We first address the immediate condition, then develop a practical repair plan based on what is affected and which specialists are required.

Emergency response

  • Moisture-source and visible-condition review
  • Identification of damaged porous finishes
  • Isolation and protection planning
  • Referral to qualified mould specialists when necessary
  • A repair scope after the area is cleared

Repair and restoration

  • Replacement of removed drywall and insulation
  • Trim and flooring repairs
  • Surface preparation and sealing
  • Painting and finish restoration
  • Repairs intended to address the original moisture pathway

Important safety notice

Large, recurring, hidden, or health-sensitive mould conditions should be assessed by a qualified environmental or remediation professional before rebuilding.

What not to do

  • !Do not paint or caulk over visible growth
  • !Do not disturb a large affected area without containment
  • !Do not direct ordinary fans across suspected contamination
  • !Do not rebuild until moisture and remediation concerns are resolved

What happens after stabilization

Prevention depends on correcting the moisture pathway and drying the assembly. Where remediation is required, rebuilding begins only after the area has been properly treated and cleared.

We provide a clear repair scope for the work within our role and coordinate licensed plumbing, electrical, structural, or environmental specialists when the condition requires them.
